19th Issue of Gender Brief for Serbia
Serbia's gender equality challenges were highlighted in a September 2023 report by Dunja Mijatović, Commissioner for Human Rights at the Council of Europe. Despite commendable efforts in legislation, progress is slow, with a concerning prevalence of violence against women. Mijatović urged an end to misogynistic statements, emphasizing the need to enhance support services for vulnerable groups. Pending action plans include combating gender-based violence and implementing gender equality and Women Peace and Security strategies. The state is undergoing a simplified CEDAW reporting procedure. In November 2023, the Generation Equality event in Kazakhstan aimed at promoting women's economic empowerment featured Natasa Colic as a new Commitment-Maker. Actress Milena Radulovic's testimony in a high-profile trial exposed sexual assault by a respected drama teacher, Miroslav Aleksic and the trial continues.
